In the two preceding blog posts, we’ve reviewed the multiple causes of depression, and why anti-depressants are not effective in the treatment of mild to moderate symptoms. Now we’re going to review a wide variety of treatment approaches.
Many doctors are now recommending elimination of grains from the diet, even wheat, but especially white flour. I’ve seen the results of the Grain Brain diet promoted by Dr. David Perlmutter, and they are quite promising.
Here’s a very simple, but powerful way to improve your physical health. I stumbled upon this BBC documentary and hope you’ll take the time to watch it.
I have previously shared with you that studies have shown a link between calcium supplementation and an increased risk of heart attacks (myocardial infarction) and cardiovascular disease in women and men. The use of calcium supplements to prevent declines in bone mineral density and fractures is widespread in the United States, and thus reports of elevated cardiovascular disease risk in users of calcium supplements are a major public health concern.
New research determined that Curcumin, the yellow pigment of turmeric (Curcuma longa), may provide significant benefit in preventing telomere shortening and may actually promote elongation of telomeres.
Although telomeres shorten with each cell division, dividing cells express telomerase, a protein complex that synthesizes and elongates telomeres. Researchers sought to determine if Curcumin could increase telomerase expression and thereby help preserve telomere length. To test their hypothesis, they chose to look at its effects on telomerase expression in brain cells exposed to beta-amyloid, a primary source of oxidative damage and brain cell death linked to Alzheimer’s.
Do you drink fresh vegetable juices? Did you try it and stopped doing it because of the hassle (cleaning the machine)? I’ve been juicing fairly regularly for several decades, and when I stop, I wonder why I did. It is one of the healthiest things I do.
The health detriments of soy consumption are reiterated in a new study out of the University of Connecticut that highlights the importance of avoiding soy at all costs. Researchers from the school found that men who consume soy protein rather than whey protein for muscle recovery and growth experience considerable reductions in their testosterone levels, as well as marked increases in levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
